The Ranch offers counseling services, life-skills education, employment training, and arts and recreation. This facility, a former working farm in the midst of suburban Elk Grove, is designed to serve the several hundred 13-25-year-old youth in the Elk Grove and Sacramento region in the foster system or recently emancipated, many of whom are pregnant or parenting.
Currently, the City of Elk Grove provides education to more foster youth than any other community in Northern California: According to the Sacramento County Office of Education, well over 500 foster youth live here and attend public school. Rather than waiting for them to slip through the cracks, we want to help them to help them to escape the pattern of neglect and institutionalization.
A group of 12 current foster youth have come together as a Youth Council with the guidance of Chicks in Crisis. This group, all pregnant or parenting, are advising the planning for facilities and services at The Ranch. In addition, they receive education, youth leadership development, and parenting materials from CIC.
