Chicks in Crisis operates almost entirely on the goodwill of others.
FROM THE COOP TO THE VILLAGE
Realizing how many of our participants are young women and girls struggling to survive in dangerous environments, Chicks in Crisis created “The Coop”, a safe and secure house that offered emergency shelter and transitional housing to homeless and at risk young women and girls in the foster-care system. AlthoughTthe Coop is no longer in operation however Chicks in Crisis is working toward the development of “The Village” – honestly, the name has not been confirmed but stay tuned for more information as this wonderful level of assistance progresses. The intent is to build housing for this same group of at risk women and girls.
Chicks in Crisis makes a profound impact on hundreds of women’s lives every day, though some days just one is enough.
Another of our success stories is Gabby. Despite being homeless and having none of the basic necessities for daily living, let alone the supplies she would need to begin her college life, Gabby never gave up her dream of higher education.
Gabby worked hard and was awarded scholarships to several colleges. She chose to attend San Francisco State University but needed somewhere safe to stay before leaving. A school counselor informed Chicks in Crisis of Gabby’s situation, and she was immediately offered the opportunity to move into “The Coop.” Gabby spent the summer under the loving and watchful eye of The Coop’s “Mother Hen,” Corky. In addition to providing a loving and safe home, CIC rallied the community and threw Gabby a “Going to College” shower. Through the kindness and generosity of the community, Gabby received new bedding, towels, a clock radio, desk lamp, and hundreds of dollars in gift cards!
